The Anveekshana. Thailand
The Anveekshana (a registered, non-profit, religious trust established in Thailand) facilitates activities that encourage and promote free reflection and inquiry into issues which steer and shape our outer and inner lives, and in turn, our society. And because today's world is what we have made of it, it is possible that a deeper understanding of ourselves will lead to a more compassionate, humane and responsible society.
Anveekshana's objectives are inspired by the teachings of J Krishnamurti (1895-1986), widely regarded as one of the greatest religious teachers of our times.
"Creation is something that is holy; that's the most sacred thing in life and. if you have made a mess of your life, change it today not tomorrow. If you are uncertain, find out why and be certain. If your thinking is not straight, think straight, logically. Unless all that is prepared, all that is settled, you can't enter into the world of creation."
"Truth cannot be accumulated. What is accumulated is always being destroyed; it withers away. Truth can never wither because it can only be found from moment to moment in every thought, in every relationship, in every word, in every gesture, in a smile, in tears. And if you and I can find that and live it- the very living is the finding of it- then we shall not become propagandists; we shall be creative human beings- not perfect human beings, but creative human beings, which is vastly different."
The Anveekshana's range of activities centre round three concerns: 1. Bringing people together in a shared exploration into the workings of the mind through reflection, dialogue, discussion, study and retreat.
1.1 The Stream Garden Retreat
1.2 DVD show and dialogue in Bangkok and other cities 1.3 The Annual Gatherings
2. The Teachings Dissemination Programme Dissemination of the Krishnamurti Teachings in Thailand is central to the vision of the Anveekshana. "Teachings Dissemination" is an umbrella term that includes the Translations, Publications, Distribution programmes, and the Gift Books scheme.
2.1 The Translation Programme The translation of Krishnamurti's works in Thailand long precedes the time of the Anveekshana. Away from and unknown to the copyrights-holders (the Krishnamurti Foundations, UK and USA), interest in the Teachings lead the Thai literati to engage in inspired and spirited translation and publication activity. For the first time, it was the Anveekshana that entered into formal agreements with the copyright holders to bring out translations that had legal consent. The Anveekshana has since covered significant ground in establishing professional standards in the quality of its translation work The foundation frequently invites past translators, writers and those interested, to its Translators' Meets to discuss and debate on the modes of effective translation, and on issues related to Krishnamurti's uncommon interpretation of common terms. In the emerging role of the Anveekshana as translator, the guiding concerns have been different. The concerns centre round releasing such Krishnamurti literature that will:
A. relate to Thai society's dominant concerns of the time
B. introduce Krishnamurti to a new readership. The Translations Programme of the Anveekshana primarily comprises a team of dedicated volunteers. It is on their unique combination of strengths - an interest in the Teachings, the knowledge of both English and Thai, and most significantly, the time and interest they are willing to invest - that the programme achieves its objectives. The translators' achievements in few years since the programme was seriously taken up, are to be seen in the shelves of 500-prominent bookstores across Thailand.
2.2 The Publication Programme The publication is one the central activities of the Anveekshana's commitment to the dissemination of the Teachings in Thailand. The Anveekshana is a registered publishing house. The publication programme was launched and is largely sustained through donations. Even so. it is the Anveekshana's high priority objective to make the programme self-sustainable. The books are largely published as bilingual. This offers the reader the opportunity to cross check with the authenticity of the translation. Many of the DVD's are subtitled. Distribution of the books and the dvd's is done via the bookfairs, the Stream Garden Retreat and the internet within Thailand. For abroad, the Thai translations of the books and the dvd's are also sold for Thai speaking population only. The books are also distributed by professional agencies through a network of some 500 prominent bookstores across Thailand. The Gift Books scheme, the central purpose of which is to make Krishnamurti's work widely available to those living in interior regions of the country, supplies the material to public and institutional libraries free of cost. This scheme is made possible entirely through donor support. LIST OF PUBLIC AND INSTITUTIONAL LIBRARIES
3. Other Activities: Stream Garden rents out it's facilties to varied groups to conduct their own workshops. In the process they get an introduction to Krishnamurti and there upon many participants buy Krishnamurti books and dvd's and some come to attend the annual gatherings and come for personal retreats.
